Vestibular & Balance Physiotherapy at Home

Assessment and treatment for dizziness, vertigo and BPPV, carried out calmly at home so you don't have to travel while symptoms are at their worst.

Vestibular physiotherapy at home

The vestibular system in the inner ear works with your eyes and body to keep you balanced and your vision steady. When it isn't working properly, people may experience vertigo (a spinning sensation), dizziness, unsteadiness or a sense of the world moving when it isn't.

Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialised form of physiotherapy that uses specific assessments, techniques and exercises to help the brain and balance system recover or adapt. For some problems, such as BPPV, targeted treatment may bring relief quite quickly; for others, improvement is more gradual.

Travelling while dizzy can be unpleasant and sometimes unsafe. Seeing a physiotherapist at home means no car or bus journeys, no busy waiting room, and the chance to rest straight after treatment.

Who can benefit?

People experiencing vertigo, positional dizziness, ongoing unsteadiness or balance problems, including those who have fallen or lost confidence walking because of dizzy symptoms. We'll always advise you to see your GP first if symptoms are new, severe or accompanied by other worrying signs.

Conditions we commonly help with

Dizziness has many causes. These are the vestibular and balance problems we most often assess and treat.

  • BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)

Brief spinning triggered by rolling over, lying down or looking up. BPPV physiotherapy uses repositioning manoeuvres that often help.

  • Vertigo and positional dizziness

Physiotherapy for vertigo begins with careful testing to identify the likely cause and the most suitable approach.

  • Vestibular dysfunction

After inner ear infection or inflammation, such as vestibular neuritis, exercises help the brain compensate for reduced balance signals.

  • Persistent unsteadiness and balance problems

Graded balance training helps you feel steadier standing, walking and turning.

  • Motion-related dizziness

Where appropriate, habituation exercises can gradually reduce sensitivity to busy environments or movement.

  • Falls and reduced confidence linked to dizziness

Combining dizziness and balance rehabilitation with walking practice helps rebuild confidence moving around.

How physiotherapy can help

Depending on your assessment, vestibular physiotherapy may include repositioning manoeuvres for BPPV, gaze stabilisation exercises, habituation exercises and balance and walking training. Exercises are introduced gradually, and it's normal for them to bring on mild symptoms briefly as the system adapts.

We explain what each exercise is for, how often to do it and what to expect, so you feel in control of your rehabilitation between visits.

Benefits of home physiotherapy

Home visits remove the need to travel while dizzy and let us practise balance in your real surroundings, such as turning in the kitchen, looking up to cupboards or managing the stairs.

  • No travelling while dizzy
  • Rest immediately after treatment
  • Balance practice in real surroundings
  • Clear, paced exercise programmes

What to expect

The first appointment includes a detailed history of your symptoms, specific vestibular and balance tests and, where appropriate, treatment on the day. We'll agree a personalised plan and review progress at each visit, adjusting exercises as your symptoms settle.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can BPPV be treated in one or two visits?

Often it can. Repositioning manoeuvres resolve many cases quickly, although some people need a few sessions, and we'll show you what to do if symptoms return.

Is home treatment suitable when I feel this dizzy?

It's often easier. There's no travel, no waiting room, and you can lie down straight after treatment.
