Post-operative rehabilitation

Post-Operative Physiotherapy at Home

Structured recovery after hip or knee replacement, fracture or other orthopaedic surgery, guided step by step in your own home so you can get moving safely and confidently again.

Post-operative physiotherapy at home

Post-operative rehabilitation helps you recover movement, strength and confidence after surgery. The first weeks at home are often when people feel most uncertain: the hospital team has given advice, but putting it into practice on your own stairs or in your own bathroom can feel very different.

Common difficulties include stiffness around the operated joint, weakness after time spent resting, tiredness, discomfort when walking and understandable anxiety about doing too much or too little. Some people also find their overall fitness has dropped after a hospital stay.

Home physiotherapy makes rehabilitation practical. Rather than travelling to a clinic while you are still sore or unable to drive, we work on walking around your home, getting on and off the bed, chair and toilet, and managing the stairs you use every day.

Who can benefit?

Anyone recovering from joint replacement, fracture, spinal or other orthopaedic surgery, particularly people who find travel difficult in the early weeks, and those whose mobility or confidence has dropped after a hospital stay.

Conditions and procedures we commonly help with

Recovery depends on the operation, your general health and how you were moving beforehand. These are the situations we see most often.

  • Hip replacement recovery

Rebuilding walking, strength and mobility while following your surgeon's precautions, and gradually returning to everyday activities with confidence.

  • Knee replacement recovery

Working on knee bend and straightening, strength and walking so that stairs, getting up from chairs and daily routines become easier again.

  • Hip fracture rehabilitation

Often following a fall, hip fracture recovery focuses on safe walking, transfers, balance and reducing the risk of further falls.

  • Fracture recovery

Progressive rehabilitation following appropriate medical treatment and immobilisation, for fractures such as wrist, shoulder, ankle or pelvis.

  • Spinal surgery rehabilitation

Where appropriate, gentle progression of movement, posture and core strength in line with your surgical team's guidance.

  • Orthopaedic surgery

Personalised rehabilitation following other musculoskeletal procedures, guided by your surgical team's advice.

  • Reduced mobility after hospitalisation

Helping rebuild strength and confidence following inactivity or a hospital stay.

  • Post-hospital deconditioning

Rehabilitation focused on everyday movement, strength and independence once you're home.

  • Loss of confidence after surgery or discharge

Many people feel wary of moving after an operation. Practising with a physiotherapist present helps rebuild trust in your body.

How physiotherapy can help

Early rehabilitation usually focuses on circulation, gentle movement, pain management and safe walking with any aids you've been given. As healing progresses, we build strength, joint range, balance and stamina, and reduce reliance on walking aids when it is safe to do so.

We always work within the guidance from your surgical team, and will contact them or suggest you speak to your GP if anything in your recovery doesn't look as expected.

Benefits of home physiotherapy

The real test of recovery is managing your own home. Practising on your stairs, getting in and out of your own bed and walking to your front door makes each exercise directly relevant, and removes the need to travel while you're still healing.

  • No travelling while you heal
  • Practise stairs and transfers at home
  • Guidance aligned with your surgeon's advice
  • A clear route back to normal activity

What to expect

We start with an assessment of your movement, pain, walking and home set-up, and discuss what you want to get back to. You'll receive a personalised exercise plan, with each visit reviewing progress and adjusting the programme until you are managing independently.
